How to bet on the Super Bowl

Are you unsure of how to place a bet on the Super Bowl? While it's fairly straightforward, to ensure you do not make a costly mistake, just follow these simple steps for how to bet money on the Super Bowl:

  1. Review the sports betting sites that we recommend and decide which one is best for you.
  2. Open an account with that sportsbook and make your first deposit. Don't forget to take advantage of the welcome offer.
  3. Navigate the site/app to the football section and locate the markets (props, futures, moneyline, point spread, totals) being offered for the Super Bowl.
  4. Click on the odds for the market you want to bet on.
  5. When the betting slip appears, enter the amount you wish to wager (but no more than what you have in your account).
  6. When you're ready, click on 'place bet' and enjoy the game.

How do Super Bowl betting odds work?

To be a successful sports bettor, one thing is crucial and that's understanding how odds work. One of the worst things you can do is pretend you know and place a bet without a clear understanding of how Super Bowl betting odds work.

So, to give you a better idea, let's examine the betting odds on the Super Bowl game for last season:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Point Spread
+3.0 (1.91)
Moneyline
2.38
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs
Point Spread
-3.0 (1.91)
Moneyline
1.64

In this game, the Chiefs were favoured to win by three points; the Buccaneers were three-point underdogs. For bets on the Chiefs to pay off, Kansas City had to win by more than three points.

At the same time, for bets on the Buccaneers to pay off, fans just needed them not to lose by three points or more. By using our odds calculator, we can figure out that bettors needed to put down C$110 to win C$100 in either case (for a total payout of C$210).

You don't have to bet C$100, of course. But you can find out how much you could potentially win for any sports wager at any odds using our handy Super Bowl betting odds calculator.

Popular Super Bowl bets

There are countless different ways to bet on the Super Bowl. But rather than making you trawl through the internet in search of the best Super Bowl bets, we've collated some of the most popular betting options for NFL football's grand finale:

Moneyline bets

When you hear people talking about betting on someone to win 'straight up', they are talking about betting on the winner of the game (no point spread involved). But such wagers could be considered unfair since one team (the favourite) is better than the other (the underdog).

But that is where the nature of a moneyline bet on the Super Bowl comes in. The additional risk that comes with betting on the underdog is compensated by the opportunity to win a higher payout. The number in the moneyline tells you how much you can win depending on who you bet on.

Let's look again at the moneyline for Super Bowl LV:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2.38
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs
1.64

Using the odds calculator, we can work out that a C$100 bet on the Buccaneers would result in winning C$138. But it would take a bet of C$156 on the Chiefs to win C$100.

Point spread

The point spread is a number set by oddsmakers indicating the expected margin of victory or defeat. For the favoured team, the number has a minus sign, highlighting bettors will have to subtract the spread from their team's final point total. The number for underdogs is positive (+), indicating that the spread will be added to their team's final score.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
+3.0 (1.91)
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs
-3.0 (1.91)

To win a bet against the spread, the team you choose must have the higher score after the spread is applied to the final score. For example, had the Buccaneers lost Super Bowl LV by two points, bettors that took the spread of +3 would have won their wagers.

Totals bets

Sometimes you just cannot predict who is going to win the Super Bowl. But you may have a pretty good idea that the game will either be a high scoring one or a low scoring one. That is where the totals bet on Super Bowl comes in handy.

Oddsmakers will set a number representing the projected final combined score of the game. If you think the actual number will be higher than what oddsmakers set, you bet the over. On the flip side, if you think it will be lower, you bet the under. That's why it is often referred to as the 'over/under'.

O 56.0
1.91
U 56.0
1.91

The closing total at sportsbooks for Super Bowl LV was 56.0. Since the final score of Super Bowl LV was 31-9 for a total of 40, bets on the under were paid out.

Prop bets

Super Bowl prop bets, or Super Bowl proposition bets, are bets that people can make on aspects of the big game other than the final outcome.

Examples of some of the best Super Bowl prop bets offered each year include wagering on the total number of touchdowns, passing yards per quarterback, rushing yards per running back, who will be the named Super Bowl MVP, etc.

For the big game, sportsbooks tend to go all out and offer lots of fun things to bet on during the Super Bowl that have got nothing to do with the game action. Some examples of weird Super Bowl bets include:

  • Gatorade Super Bowl bet – the colour of Gatorade thrown on the winning coach
  • Super Bowl coin flip bet – whether the coin toss will be heads or tails
  • Super Bowl National Anthem bets, such as duration of song, whether the singer will make a mistake, etc
  • Halftime Show bets, for instance which song will be played and what the performer will be wearing

Super Bowl prop bet odds will often reflect the likelihood of something occurring. For example, all Super Bowl prop bets related to player production will be based off past performance. So, the odds will be roughly 50/50. But for something like the colour of Gatorade where there are several possibilities, odds will vary.

Futures betting

Futures bets are exactly what the name implies. They are bets you can make on the outcome of something that occurs in the future. When a Super Bowl game has been played, the odds for the next Super Bowl are often immediately released.

Some sportsbooks will even post the odds for a future Super Bowl game before the current game has ended. The favourites to win Super Bowl LVI should come as no surprise to football fans – the winners of last year's Super Bowl LV, the Kansas City Chiefs (5.0).

After the Chiefs, the expected contenders are the following teams:

  • Green Bay Packers 5.5
  • Tamper Bay Buccaneers 8.0
  • Buffalo Bills 10.0
  • Los Angeles Rams 10.5
  • Dallas Cowboys 11.0
  • Indianapolis Colts 19.0

There are several other teams that are expected to factor into the Super Bowl conversation, but their odds indicate they're real longshots to win:

  • Cincinnati Bengals 29.0
  • San Francisco 49ers 41.0
  • Baltimore Ravens 61.0
  • Los Angeles Chargers 61.0
  • Philadelphia Eagles 81.0
  • Las Vegas Raiders 151.0

While the payout on teams like the Philadelphia Eagles (81.0) and Las Vegas Raiders (151.0) would be substantial, the odds are high for a reason.

Parlay betting

At the end of the NFL season, you may feel the urge to try to win a little more money betting on the big game. To that end, you just need to make a couple Super Bowl parlay bets.

Parlay bets allow you to group together individual bets, called legs, into a single wager. If you choose right on each individual leg, then you win. But if you pick every leg right but one, then you lose the whole bet.

Since there's an exponential amount of risk involved with parlay bets, that risk is reflected in the potential payout. Of course, the more underdogs you pick, the higher your potential payout can be.

Live Super Bowl betting

Live betting is a fast-growing segment of the online sportsbook industry. It gives bettors the chance to continue making bets on a game as it is being played. Most sportsbooks that offer live betting will typically offer point spread, moneyline and totals as options.

As the game progresses, depending on the event of the game, odds will fluctuate. For example, the Chiefs were favoured to win Super Bowl LV at kick-off by three (-3). When they took an early 3-0 lead, nothing probably changed.

But when the Buccaneers took a 14-3 lead about midway through the second quarter, the spread may have been as high as 11 or 12 points. Had the Chiefs lost by eight, bets placed on the Chiefs to win against the spread when it was 11 points would be winners.

Super Bowl squares betting

Super Bowl betting squares are a common method many people 'bet' on the big game without realizing that they're technically gambling. It is not uncommon to see this type of betting at Super Bowl parties since it's a great way to enrich the experience.

Participants will pay a set amount to claim a square on the board (10 x 10). Once all the squares are accounted for, numbers will be randomly drawn for each corresponding row/column.

Winners are often drawn at the end of the first and third quarter as well as halftime and, of course, the final score. The winning square will be the one whose numbers coincide with the last number of each team's score.

OGCA's Super Bowl betting tips

Here at OGCA, we want to give you the best shot at winning. That's why we've put together some expert Super Bowl betting tips to help you develop the best possible strategy ahead of the big game:

1
Research the form

It's worth seeing how dominant a team has been during the regular season and playoffs. Plus, if one team has got the better of the other in recent meetings, and even if they do well at a certain stadium.

For example, prior to Super Bowl LIV, Kansas City Chiefs had won three of their previous four games against San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs went on to win 31-20.

2
Line shop

It is not unusual for the Super Bowl betting line movement to vary from one sportsbook to the next.

It all depends on how much money they take on one side. The difference may not be significant, but if the game ends up being close, you'll be glad you have it.

3
Don't bank on the experts

It's wise not to rely too much on 'expert' Super Bowl betting predictions. The experts are given that classification for a reason, but they're not infallible – and remember it is your money on the line if they're wrong. Go ahead and use their predictions as a starting point. But do your own homework.

4
Bet early for futures

Often, the best prices for teams to win the Super Bowl will be available before the season starts. As the season progresses, especially when there are just two teams left, their odds will be dramatically lower/shorter.

That's why you should bet on longshots or dark horse candidates sooner rather than later. Once they prove they're a contender, their odds are just going to get shorter.

5
Check for welcome offers and promotions

Don't just shop for the best Super Bowl betting line – shop for the best welcome offers and promotions as well. If you're going to risk your money, you might as well get as much as you can from the sportsbook you bet with in return.

Sportsbooks will often boost the odds of several Super Bowl prop bets leading up to the big game. The increase is not always significant, but it can mean the difference between risking C$110 to win C$100 or risking C$100 to win C$110.

List of previous Super Bowl winners

Reviewing recent Super Bowl winners is worth your time when thinking about putting money on the big game. Recent Super Bowl winners will usually still have a competitive roster—but if it has been a few years, maybe not.
