Which Premier League fans are the biggest drinkers?

For many sports fans, having a drink is an integral part of watching their favourite side in action. But who are the thirstiest set of supporters in the English Premier League?

We surveyed 2,000 Premier League fans to find out how many enjoy a drinking binge – defined as five pints or more by the NHS – on game day. We also asked them to admit if they spiced up their day with illicit recreational drugs.

Bees on top of the EPL table when it comes to drinking

Brentford are known as the Bees – but a large number of their fans clearly get a buzz from several pints when their heroes are in action. The same can be said for Arsenal and Norwich City supporters who are joint second in this table.

In contrast, Manchester United and Newcastle United have two of the soberest fanbases, along with Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. The least likely to binge drink table shows the percentage of fans who don’t drink at all on game day.

Whose fans are high on the list for illicit drug use?

Even larger proportions of the fans surveyed admitted to taking illicit drugs to enhance their match-going experience. Brentford topped the poll again, and Arsenal were in the top five here, too.

In contrast, only a tiny fraction of Leeds fans indulge, while supporters of Wolves are also highly restrained.

According to Statista, the average price of an EPL pint is £4.28 – though many fans will do their drinking away from the ground. If you drink five pints on every game day, over a 38-game season you could spend about £800 on beer alone.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that increasing numbers of supporters supplement their game-day experience with drugs, especially cocaine. English police chiefs have called for action to crack down on drug use around games.

Millennials score most highly for game-day binge drinking

Millennials – people born between 1981 – 1996 – are well ahead when it comes to serious drinking around a soccer match. Some 30 per cent admitted to binge-drinking on game day, with even more confessing to illicit drug use. Whereas, far lower proportion of Gen Z – teenagers and under 25s – indulge to a similar extent.

For many fans, it’s all part of the game

Our survey has revealed a fascinating insight into the drinking culture around England’s national sport. Nearly 15 million people flock to Premier League games each season – and it’s apparent that, for large numbers of them, a little liquid refreshment is a key element of their match-going experience.

It’s also interesting to note how many supporters take recreational drugs on game day – and intriguing to see how much the figures vary between generations.
